Next Steps


While still searching for a trainer, I decided to give in to my wife’s frequent requests to go for a walk in the evening after dinner. I had always preferred to sit in front of the TV and then go to sleep.

Considering that apart from drinking a glass of water and cutting snacking before lunch, I was at a dead end; I decided to take those walks. It was amazing at two levels. We started having dinner early so that we could finish the walk in time.Follow me (1)

Firstly on a physical level, it helped me sleep better and we were walking a circuit that took close to 60 minutes so some calories were getting burnt. This made an impact as I lost a few kilos.

Secondly, it seemed suddenly we had meaningful conversations that were not happening at home because of the TV. I started looking forward to the walks and that convinced me that walking should be a part of the new lifestyle that I wanted to follow.

Many of you who are aiming to lose a few pounds could do just these three things – glass of water first thing in the morning, good breakfast and nothing until Lunch followed by an early dinner and an hour of walking. This will easily knock off a few pounds.

There is an old saying – “Breakfast like a king, Lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper”. The more calories you have at the start of the day helps kick start your metabolism and the working day consumes the calories. However, at night when you sleep you consume less calories and the body is designed to store the excess food as fats for future use. So it makes sense to experiment and find the right quantity of dinner that is light yet wont wake you up at night due to hunger.

Meanwhile, I started realizing the urgency to get a personal trainer and put on some muscles. Our body consumes a certain amount of calories at rest (say during sleep or when sitting) and that is our rate of metabolism. When the body has more muscles, the base metabolism increases. So, if you are like me and like your food, then instead of finding 100% of solution trying to reduce your calorie intake, you could off load part of the problem by putting on some muscles to increase you base metabolism and ability to consume calories.

To conclude, the elements of my new healthier lifestyle now consisted of:

  • A glass of water first thing in the morning
  • Solid breakfast and nothing else until lunch
  • Early but light dinner
  • Walking an hour after dinner.

As you can see, you can do all this without any additional cost. Make some time for yourself to walk and avoid the temptation to sit in front of the television. You can record your programs and binge watch them on the weekend.
